If you are a PlayStation 4 (PS4) user, you may have encountered the frustrating error message that says, “A DNS server cannot be used.” This error can prevent you from connecting to the internet on your console and accessing online features. However, there are several steps you can take to resolve this issue and get back to gaming.

1. Check your network connection

The first thing you should do when encountering a DNS server error is to ensure that your network connection is working properly.

Check that your console is connected to your router or modem via an Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi. If using Wi-Fi, ensure that the signal strength is strong and stable.

2. Restart your console and router

Oftentimes, simply restarting your PS4 and router can resolve temporary network issues.

Turn off your console and unplug it from the power source. Then, power off your router by unplugging it as well. Wait for a few minutes before plugging everything back in and turning them on again.

3. Update the firmware

An outdated firmware can sometimes cause DNS server errors on PS4.

Make sure that both your console’s firmware and your router’s firmware are up to date. Check the manufacturer’s website for any available updates and follow their instructions for installation.

4. Change DNS settings

If the issue persists, you can try changing the DNS settings on your PS4 manually. Here’s how:

  • Step 1: Go to the main menu of your PS4 and select “Settings. “
  • Step 2: Scroll down and choose “Network.

  • Step 3: Select “Set Up Internet Connection. “
  • Step 4: Choose either “Use Wi-Fi” or “Use a LAN Cable,” depending on your connection type.
  • Step 5: Select “Custom” when prompted to choose a network setup method.
  • Step 6: On the IP Address Settings screen, choose “Automatic. “
  • Step 7: On the DHCP Host Name screen, select “Do Not Specify. “
  • Step 8: On the DNS Settings screen, choose “Manual. “
  • Step 9: Enter the following DNS server addresses: Primary DNS – 8.8.8, Secondary DNS – 8.4.4.
  • Step 10: Leave all other settings as they are and proceed to complete the network setup.

5. Reset your router

If none of the above steps work, you can try resetting your router to its factory settings. However, be aware that this will erase any custom configurations you have made on your router.

To reset your router, follow these general steps:

  • Note down or take a picture of your current router settings for future reference.
  • Locate the reset button on your router (usually at the back).
  • Using a paperclip or a similar object, press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds.
  • Release the reset button.
  • Your router will now restart and return to its factory settings.

After resetting your router, you will need to set it up again with your ISP’s provided details.

6. Contact your ISP

If you have exhausted all the above options and the DNS server error still persists, it may be time to reach out to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for further assistance. They can perform additional troubleshooting steps or provide insights specific to your network configuration.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the “DNS server cannot be used” error on your PS4 and get back online with ease. Happy gaming!
