A DNS (Domain Name System) server is a crucial component of the internet infrastructure that plays a fundamental role in translating human-readable domain names into machine-readable IP addresses. It acts as a directory service, enabling users to access websites and other internet resources using easy-to-remember domain names instead of complex numerical IP addresses.

Understanding DNS Resolution

The process of translating domain names into IP addresses is known as DNS resolution. When you enter a domain name into your web browser, such as www.example.com, the browser needs to know the corresponding IP address to establish a connection with the web server hosting that website.

Here’s an overview of how DNS resolution works:

  1. Your computer first checks its local DNS cache to see if it has previously resolved the domain name. If it finds a match, it can quickly retrieve the corresponding IP address and establish a connection.
  2. If the domain name is not found in the local cache, your computer sends a query to your configured DNS server.
  3. The configured DNS server then starts searching for the IP address associated with the requested domain name. It may have its own cache or forward the request to other DNS servers until it finds an authoritative server that can provide the correct answer.
  4. The authoritative DNS server for the requested domain responds with the corresponding IP address, which is then returned to your computer.
  5. Your computer stores this information in its local cache for future use and establishes a connection with the web server using the obtained IP address.
