What Is a Domain Name Server DNS and How Does It Work?

A Domain Name Server (DNS) is a fundamental part of the internet infrastructure that translates human-readable domain names, such as www.example.com, into machine-readable IP addresses, which are used to identify and locate websites and other online resources. In simpler terms, DNS acts as a phone book for the internet, helping your computer find the correct website you want to visit.

How Does DNS Work?

When you type a domain name into your web browser’s address bar and hit enter, your computer sends a request to a DNS resolver or DNS server. The resolver then queries other DNS servers in the hierarchy until it finds the authoritative DNS server for that specific domain.

At its core, DNS works on a distributed database model where multiple DNS servers collaborate to provide fast and accurate responses. There are different types of DNS servers involved in this process:

  • Root Servers: These servers are responsible for directing requests to the appropriate Top-Level Domain (TLD) servers. There are 13 root servers strategically located around the world.
  • TLD Servers: TLD servers maintain information about specific domains such as .com, .org, or .net.

    When you request a domain name within a specific TLD, these servers direct you to the authoritative name server for that domain.

  • Authoritative Name Servers: These servers hold the official records for each domain. They store information about IP addresses associated with domain names and respond directly with this information when queried by resolvers.
  • Recursive Resolvers: These resolvers are typically provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or third-party services like Google Public DNS or Cloudflare DNS. They act as middlemen between your computer and authoritative name servers, handling the resolution process on your behalf.

Once the authoritative name server receives the query from the resolver, it sends back the corresponding IP address. The resolver then caches this information to speed up future requests, allowing you to access websites more quickly.

The Importance of DNS

DNS plays a crucial role in ensuring that you can access websites and other online resources by simplifying the process of translating domain names into IP addresses. Without DNS, we would have to remember complex sequences of numbers for every website we want to visit!

Additionally, DNS allows website owners to change their hosting providers or IP addresses without disrupting user access. By simply updating DNS records, they can ensure that visitors are directed to the correct location even after making changes behind the scenes.
