Larry Thompson

Setting up a Discord server can seem like a daunting task, but it’s actually quite simple. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through the process step by step. So, let’s get started!

Step 1: Creating a New Server

The first thing you need to do is create a new server on Discord. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open Discord and log in to your account.

  2. On the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see a list of servers you’re already a member of. At the bottom of this list, click on the plus icon (+) to create a new server.

  3. A pop-up window will appear asking you to choose between creating a new server or joining an existing one. Click on “Create My Own” to proceed.

  4. Next, give your server a name. Make sure to choose something that accurately represents the purpose or theme of your server.

  5. You can also add an icon for your server by clicking on the “Choose an Image” button below the server name field.

This step is optional but can help make your server more visually appealing.

  6. Once you’re done, click on the “Create” button at the bottom right corner of the window. Congratulations! You’ve successfully created your Discord server!

Step 2: Configuring Server Settings

Now that you have your own Discord server, it’s time to configure its settings according to your preferences. To do this:

  1. Click on the down arrow next to your newly created server’s name at the top left corner of Discord. This will open a drop-down menu with various options.

  2. Select “Server Settings” from the drop-down menu.

  3. On the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see a list of server settings categories. Let’s go through some important ones:

Roles allow you to manage permissions for different members of your server. By default, Discord provides three roles: @everyone, @here, and @mentions. You can create additional roles and customize their permissions based on your requirements.

Channels are where conversations take place in Discord. By default, there are two types of channels: text channels and voice channels. You can create new channels by clicking on the plus icon (+) next to each category.

Server Boost

If you have Discord Nitro, you can boost your server’s audio quality and get other exclusive perks by using Server Boosts.

Step 3: Inviting Members

A server is only as good as its members! To invite people to join your Discord server:

  1. Click on the down arrow next to your server’s name at the top left corner of Discord.

  2. Select “Invite People” from the drop-down menu.

  3. A pop-up window will appear with an invite link that you can share with others. You can copy this link by clicking on the “Copy” button or customize it further by clicking on “Edit Invite Link”.

  4. You can also set various permissions for different invite links in order to control who has access to your server.

Step 4: Managing and Moderating Your Server

As the server owner or administrator, it’s important to effectively manage and moderate your server to ensure a positive experience for all members. Here are a few tips:

  • Establish Clear Rules: Create a dedicated channel or section where you outline the rules of your server. Make sure to enforce these rules consistently.

  • Assign Moderators: If your server grows, consider assigning moderators to help you manage it.

Moderators can assist with enforcing rules, resolving conflicts, and keeping the server organized.

  • Use Bots: Discord bots can automate various tasks, such as moderation, music playback, and more. Explore available bots and add them to your server to enhance its functionality.

Congratulations! You now know how to set up a Discord server from scratch.

With these steps and tips in mind, you’ll be able to create a thriving community where people can connect and communicate. Happy Discord-ing!
