How Do I Make a Call on a Discord Server?

Angela Bailey

Discord is a popular communication platform that allows users to connect with others through text, voice, and video. One of the key features of Discord is the ability to make calls on a server.

Whether you want to have a quick voice chat with your friends or organize a conference call with multiple participants, Discord provides a seamless calling experience. In this tutorial, we will explore how to make a call on a Discord server.

Step 1: Join a Voice Channel

To initiate a call on Discord, you first need to join a voice channel on the server where you want to communicate with others. Voice channels are designated areas within a server where users can connect and communicate using their microphones.

To join a voice channel, simply click on its name in the list of available channels on the left side of your Discord window. If you can’t see any voice channels, make sure that you are in the correct server by clicking on its name at the top left corner of the screen.

Step 2: Start a Call

Once you have joined a voice channel, you are ready to start a call. In order to do so, locate the “Phone” icon at the bottom left corner of your Discord window. It is represented by an outline of a phone receiver.

Pro tip: Before starting your call, ensure that your microphone is properly connected and functioning. You can test your microphone by clicking on the gear icon next to your username at the bottom left corner of Discord and navigating to “Voice & Video” settings.

Starting an Audio Call

If you wish to start an audio-only call with other participants in the voice channel, click on the “Phone” icon once. This will initiate an audio call and other members who are in the same voice channel will receive a notification about the call.

Starting a Video Call

If you prefer a more immersive calling experience and want to enable video along with audio, you can start a video call. To do this, click on the “Phone” icon twice. This will initiate a video call and other participants will receive a notification about it.

Step 3: Adding Participants

Once you have started a call, you may want to add more participants to join in the conversation. Discord allows you to easily invite other members to your ongoing call by using the “Add Friends to DM” feature.

To add participants, look for the small user icon with a “+” sign located at the top right corner of your Discord window during an active call. Clicking on this icon will open a direct message (DM) window where you can select and invite additional friends from your server.

Step 4: Managing Call Settings

Discord provides various options for managing your call settings during an ongoing conversation. These settings allow you to customize your calling experience according to your preferences.

  • Mute/Unmute: To mute or unmute yourself during a call, simply click on the microphone icon located at the bottom left corner of Discord.
  • User Volume: You can adjust the volume of individual users in the voice channel by right-clicking on their profile picture or username and selecting “Adjust User Volume” from the context menu. This is useful if someone’s audio is too loud or too soft.
  • Server Mute/Deafen: Server administrators have the ability to mute or deafen users on their server during calls.

If you are an administrator, you can right-click on a user’s profile picture or username and select the appropriate option from the context menu.

  • Screen Share: Discord also allows you to share your screen with other participants during a call. To enable screen sharing, click on the screen share icon located at the bottom left corner of Discord. You can choose to share your entire screen or a specific application window.

Step 5: Ending a Call

Once you have finished your conversation or no longer wish to continue the call, you can easily end it. To do so, click on the red “Phone” icon located at the bottom left corner of Discord during an active call. This will terminate the call for all participants.

Note: If you leave the voice channel while a call is ongoing, the call will automatically end for all participants.

Congratulations! You have now learned how to make a call on a Discord server.

Whether it’s for gaming, collaboration, or simply staying connected with friends and communities, Discord provides an excellent platform for voice and video communication. So go ahead and start making those calls!
