Changing your Discord server to 18+ is a straightforward process that requires a few simple steps. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the process to ensure that you can effectively set up an 18+ server on Discord.
Step 1: Server Settings
To begin, navigate to your Discord server and click on the server name at the top left corner of the screen. This will open up the server settings menu.
Step 1.1: Overview
Within the server settings menu, locate and click on the “Overview” tab. This tab provides you with an overview of your server’s general settings.2: Explicit Content Filter
In the “Overview” tab, scroll down until you find the “Explicit Content Filter” option. By default, this option is set to “Don’t scan any media.”
However, to change your server to 18+, you need to disable this filter.
- Note: Disabling the explicit content filter means that users will be able to share explicit content within your server. Make sure all members are aware of this before proceeding.
Step 2: Verification Level
The next step in changing your Discord server to 18+ is adjusting the verification level. This allows you to restrict access to your server based on a user’s account age.
Step 2.1: Server Settings Continued
In the same server settings menu, locate and click on the “Moderation” tab. This tab contains various moderation-related settings for your Discord server.2: Verification Level
In the “Moderation” tab, scroll down until you find the “Verification Level” option. By default, this option is set to “None.”
However, to enforce an 18+ server, you should set the verification level to “Low. “
- Note: Setting the verification level to “Low” means that users must have a verified email address linked to their Discord account in order to access your server.
Step 3: Server Rules and Guidelines
Now that you have adjusted the necessary server settings, it is essential to establish clear rules and guidelines for your 18+ Discord server. This ensures that all members understand and adhere to the expected behavior within your community.
Step 3.1: Server Channels
Create specific channels for different types of discussions or activities within your server. For example, you can have separate channels for general chat, gaming discussions, or NSFW content.2: Server Rules
Create a dedicated channel or section within an existing channel where you outline the rules and guidelines for your 18+ server. Make sure these rules are clear, concise, and easy to understand.
- Note: It’s important to explicitly state what kind of content is allowed within your server and what is not. This helps maintain a safe and comfortable environment for all members.
Step 4: Age Verification System (Optional)
If you want an additional layer of age verification for extra security, you can implement an age verification system on top of the Discord settings we’ve already adjusted in steps 1 and 2.
Step 4.1: Bots with Age Verification Functionality
Discord bots such as “UnbelievaBoat” or “Carl-bot” offer age verification features that require users to provide identification to confirm their age. These bots can automatically assign roles or restrict access to specific channels based on a user’s verified age.2: Setting Up the Bot
To set up an age verification bot, visit the respective bot’s website and follow their instructions to add the bot to your server. Once added, you can configure the bot’s settings and customize its behavior according to your needs.
By following these steps, you can effectively change your Discord server to 18+ and establish a safe and engaging environment for mature discussions and content.
