Discord is a popular communication platform that allows users to chat with friends, join communities, and even voice chat during gaming sessions. But can you make phone calls on Discord? Let’s find out!

Can I Call on Discord Server?

Discord primarily focuses on providing a seamless experience for text and voice communication within its servers. While it doesn’t offer traditional phone call capabilities like your smartphone or landline, it does provide a feature called “Voice Channels” that mimics the experience of a phone call.

Voice Channels:

When you join a Discord server, you can see different channels listed on the left-hand side of the application. One of these channels is typically dedicated to voice communication. By joining this channel, you can talk to other members who are also present in the same channel.

Creating a Voice Channel:

If you’re the owner or have appropriate permissions, you can create your own voice channel. To do so, follow these steps:

  • Click on the “+” icon next to the “Voice Channels” category.
  • Type in a name for your channel.
  • Select appropriate permissions for who can access and talk in the channel.
  • Click “Create Channel”.

Voice Call Functions:

Once you’re in a voice channel, Discord provides various functions to enhance your communication experience:

  • Push to Talk: By default, Discord uses push-to-talk mode where you need to hold down a specific key while speaking. This helps reduce background noise during conversations.
  • Voice Activity: You can also switch to voice activity mode where Discord automatically detects when you’re speaking and transmits your voice.

This is useful if you don’t want to use push-to-talk.

  • Mute and Deafen: Discord allows you to mute or deafen yourself during a call. Muting means others won’t hear your voice, while deafening means you won’t hear anyone else.
  • Screen Sharing: In addition to voice communication, Discord also offers screen sharing capabilities, allowing you to share your screen with others in the call.

Group Calls:

In addition to voice channels within servers, Discord also supports group calls. With group calls, you can invite multiple friends or members of a server to join the same voice chat.

To start a group call:

  • Select the friends or members you want to include in the call.
  • Right-click on one of the selected names.
  • Choose “Start Group Call”.

Note that group calls are limited to a maximum of ten participants at a time.

Conclusion:

In summary, while Discord doesn’t provide traditional phone calling features, it offers an alternative through voice channels and group calls. These functionalities allow users to communicate with friends and communities in real-time using their microphones. So although you can’t make phone calls on Discord as you would on a smartphone, it provides excellent options for voice communication during gaming sessions or community interactions!
